RCs NEwsletter - April 2014

It's crunch time for grass!
Believe it or not, April is here. The first quarter of 2014 is history. This means that for many producers their 'critical date' is nearly here.
The 'critical date' is the date from where, even if you receive good rain, your country won't grow a significant bulk of feed. This is due to shortening daylight lengths and lower temperatures.

If you haven't been fortunate enough to have had a good growing season, this date is a critical decision point for you.

Unless you have winter active perennial grasses, don't place your hope and money on winter rain pulling you through this year. Winter herbages etc are wonderful additions to a standing body of dry feed from summer. They generally don't have the bulk or longevity of feed to pull you through the year. I never budget on getting winter herbages in a tropical or sub-tropical system (wherever winter perennials don't grow). If you get them fantastic, treat them as a bonus – don't rely on them.
